1950's
when the rest of the world looked to us as the example of how life should be
when we owned 1/3 of the entire world economy
when new york was the center of everything
when men were men and women were women
one of the only times in history where when people were asked if they were happy and hopeful with their lives 90% said "yes"

truly our golden age and it hurts to know that it's gone

You imbecile. Without the Internet most of us would never have succumbed to the addictions that keep us here. Anime is degenerate; once upon a time children and adolescents used to read books that stimulated their intelligence and improved their cultural baggage and their command of English.

You didn't need neetbux in the 50s, because you would have been basically forced to do odd jobs, even if you didn't want to do them. Today no one will force you to do shit, and José from over the border is mowing your lawn and picking melons in the plantation.

Neither my father nor my 7 uncles (total from both sides of my family) had the education and knowledge that I possess. This would be the 50's / 60's generation.

EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM DID BETTER THAN I HAVE.

They literally just got jobs and were good workers 40 hours a week and had families, homes, vacations, etc. I can barely make the fucking rent.

Out of all my siblings / cousins (17 total) which would span the 70's / 80's, 2 or 3 have arguably done as well as the prior generation, 2 considerably better, the others considerably worse. Now with no real hope of catching up.

I'm now old enough that the possibility of a family is practically gone, and I would have to some how become a millionaire for my lifetime earnings to ever surpass theirs.

So fuck off. I fucking hate what offshoring / H1B / immigration has done to America, and I would like to slowly boil alive the fuckers responsible for all of it.

Honestly? I believe every branch of the military should maintain small groups that operate with equipment that is not dependent on modern electronics and digital computers.

For the Navy that probably means bringing back the Iowa class battleships.

For the USAF I imagine the A-10 could be modified to operate effectively even if all its modern electronics failed.

I don't trust a 100% digitized military. We need some units that can survive any type of attack by hackers, electronic warfare, etc.

Nice ad hominem attacks, but hate to say that you're wrong about me.
Every past generation or time is romaticized by the current one, and while I'm not saying that 50s america was bad, you're imagining an idealized version of it.
We've made huge technological and humanitarian advancements since then, allowing modern society to live longer, healther, not die in infancy, etc. Our businesses are bigger, better, and more efficient than ever, and the same could be said about almost every industry and niche of society.
Every decade has been more peaceful than the last, relatively, even though it may not seem like it.
These "much nostalgia" threads really bother me because you see the same people post about how libkeks are shit because all they do is appeal to emotion, which isn't wrong per we, just hypocritical.
Point is, you're romanticizing.

Technology has masked some of the failings of modern America, but the middle class is being destroyed.

Yes, you can see that in the numbers without emotion.

No, not everything is better today.

And that's not even addressing the degeneracy. You think my parent's generation had trouble dating and getting married? Yeah, OK, the marriages weren't always perfect and some didn't work out too well. But today's hookup culture full of tatted single moms is shit unless all you want is a meaningless existence.

America's has been going down hill for a while.

Oh that's right, because you are full of shit. Romanticism is a political and artistic movement that specifically values and elevates agrarian small farmers, and is a rejection of modernity, cities, and the industrial revolution.

The 1950s are looked up to because society was not degenerate, and there was a nearly ubiquitous conscious social effort to remove degeneracy from society. Essentially, the young families of the 1950s had endured the Great Depression AND World War 2, and were determined to eliminate negative pressures from the lives of their children to the greatest extent possible. This created the coddled generation of baby boomers who, knowing no adversity at all in their lives, decided that niggers being treated as they deserved was somehow oppressive, and they burned down their society in an attempt to make men of animals.
>>
>>80823362
Ok, but this affects you how exactly?
>>
Were people in the 1950s generally "happier" or is that a meme?

It seems like a lot of people today view simpler lives, specifically more "hands on" type lives like farming or taking up a single trade for your entire life to be more satisfactory and generally a quality of life improvement at the expense of not being rich, which they view as a fine tradeoff. Is this just a grass is greener/rose tinted goggles type situation or are people who live more modestly generally happier despite the hardships?

I feel like society has finally woken up to all of these things though and there is broad popular support for change on both sides of the political spectrum.

I feel like everyone can finally see the sickness in society. And admitting there's a problem is the first step. Even though liberal solutions are fucked.

If this was the 80s, boomers would tell you to stfu and work harder, and your problems are your own fault.

anyone have any theories why liberals are so invested in discrediting the 50's?

I know it's just a mere "shuttle", but still... For me this machine's been a symbol of America since I was a kid. I had a poster of it above my bed. It inspired me. It was a symbol of the big country behind the ocean where big things happen and which we all looked up to when the USSR disintegrated. This machine is a legacy of the greatest times of the greatest country on Earth.

The shuttle was a strategic error, born of cost estimates that were far too optimistic. From the perspective of cold numbers we should have continued using single use rockets. (Though Space X will probably get reusable space launch right.)

But that thing was still a massive fucking achievement and a technological tour de force. I'm inspired every time I watch a shuttle launch video.

How are things better today?
The average joe nowadays needs 3 masters degrees, a decade of work experience, and a 2 letters of recommendation just to get a decent middle-class job. (i know it's hyperbole)
The cost of food and rent is rising every year, and wages are stagnanting. Minorities are dependent on government handouts.
Millions of young adults are thousands of dollars in debt before even purchasing a house.
Healthcare costs have artificially inflated exponentially.
Pop music and social media are effectively dumbing down future generations.
The family unit has been eroded. Today's youth prefers to sleep around rather than marry in their 20's.
Single motherhood is enabled the government, ultimately leading to higher crime rates in minority communities.
>etc.etc.
America has been on the decline for decades. The technology we enjoy today is just a pacifier to keep the masses in check while the rest of the country falls into the hands of globalists.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism

>Romanticism (also the Romantic era or the Romantic period) was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850.

Or maybe you could learn something and realize that you are actually wrong on your point.

Now, you may have had a good point if you said that people tend to have a skewed idea of past eras, but you chose the word romanticism, and then you doubled down on it. So you can just be wrong and eat it.

Furthermore, you are wrong to say that a focus on the 1950s as a particular good period in a way they don't deserve is merely viewing the past through rose colored glasses. If that were the case, why choose the 1950s instead of the 1940s or the 1960s? Maybe you should look for the actual reasons people say the 1950s were good instead of being so dismissive of a point of view you do not understand.

I'm sure the A-10 can fly without its digital systems. But being effective means equipment to support its mission, and pilots actually trained "in the dark" so to speak.

Example: for something like an Iowa class battleship, that means the crew can navigate by compass and stars, reach a location, and target the enemy with the WWII mechanical shit.

It might seem paranoid, but if I was in control of things there would be a few units in each branch that could operate without modern networking, microprocessors, or integrated circuits of any kind.

The A-10's backup systems include a cable and pulley control system. As in WWI tech. The thing can return to base missing half a wing, half the tail, an engine and the hydraulics. It will be a total write-off but it will survive.
The Iowas had at their tome of construction several methods of navigating built in, and when they were upgraded in the 80s they had more added, including GPS and INS.
INS meaning they can operate blind. The original FCS is mechanical/optical, with later additions (muzzle radar for example) increasing accuracy but not replacing the originals.
You aren't paranoid, most late cold war systems were designed to function even after the satellites were no longer around.

If we had to order units to fight without modern ICs that would probably mean the SHTF in a way that nobody's missiles are working. (Yes, I know military ICs are hardened against EMP and radiation. I still can't help but wonder if it's an exploitable weak point.)

If it means our systems have been hacked BSG style then those units would be in trouble. But at least they would be there.

Also: I was under the impression that an Iowa class in WWII configuration would not be all that vulnerable to anti ship missiles? That must of the equipment that could get really fucked up was modern equipment placed on deck.

>>
>>80825708
>Oh, you mean a magical hypothetical situation that makes no fucking sense?

A hardened IC is hardened to a point. Not to any conceivable level of EMP or ionizing radiation. Systems built for spaceflight have redundant processors and failure modes precisely because they not only can experience radiation induced error, they almost certainly will...multiple times...during their mission.

Granted, the scenarios where large numbers of military grade equipment would be physically disabled would be extremely rare. But not impossible.

The other thing that concerns me is hacking. We're going balls out networking every last piece of military equipment. Makes for a very effective and integrated force. But what happens if an adversary can exploit that? Of course the problem in that scenario is that the enemy would still have their full capability, so your "old school" capable units may not last long.

I don't know...maybe the answer is to simply make sure we can fire ICBMs and SLBMs no matter what the scenario.

The Russians (not that I think they are the bees knees...my Kremlin conversation was just an example) have the best air superiority fighter, the best battlefield tank and the best battlefield assault rifle.
America is a busted flush. You went with the high-tech option, and in a balls deep, prolonged conflict you simply can't replace that shit fast enough to keep up. There's a reason military gear is simple and rugged.
>>80827365
I can't give you a response, because I don't know what's out there. Neither do you. Neither do the Pentagon generals. But I can guarantee they are leaning my way not yours.
Why do you think the A10 has 3 different control systems? Why do you think the military mothballs old planes and ships instead of scrapping them?

In Iraq, the American military had massive problems with their comms to begin with. A British officer walked into this clusterfuck and immediately sent out a sergeant to buy up every cellphone he could find. Because unplanned shit happens.

I promise you that THEY don't think they've covered their asses (they just hope they have)
You people truly have no fucking clue how devious shit gets when it comes to war.

Fuck anon, you're memeing too hard. I'm getting a meme overdose here.

>the best air superiority fighter
That would be the F22, not the 4++++++++ gen T-50.

>best battlefield tank

You mean the meme-14? With those quality Russian optics?

>best assault rifle
It's not better in any tangible way than Western rifles.

FUCKING BASED NIP

I get a massive raging boner everytime I think of this achievement of American ingenuity. Capable of speeds of Mach 3 at a cruising altitude of 85,000 ft, never lost one out in the field and still holds the record for the fastest dual engine jet on the planet.

I'm such a sperglord over this plane that I plan on painting my old Toyota Solara up to look like it, decals, stripes and all.

>You cannot describe a plausible situation in which retardedly redundant WW1 tier systems would be a good idea,

Zero day exploits in the flight control computers of multiple USAF fighters attacked at once via their airborne networking / data links.

This scenario is NOT as implausible you might hope. The F-22 had a rather embarrassing incident thanks to a FUCKING DATE BUG. As I recall 7 fighters were nearly completely disabled and only made it home by visually following their in air refueling tanker which (thank God) was nearby.

Don't tell me there are no exploits. No human being or team of human beings can verify any modern computer system and guarantee that it is free of exploits or bugs. That would be a nearly impossible challenge even with the first digital flight computer on the early F-14 Tomcat.

Thing is, the F-22 and F-35 don't fly at all without the computer. Ever. So it might be a good idea to train for that scenario with a few of the planes that can.

No, you're not going to fight World War fucking III with most of your military temporarily disabled. But you might just defend your shores long enough to patch/repair the shit that failed.

Just once. For 5 minutes.

As long as it's computers and oxygen system are working....

Except the last bit with pain vs pleasure, hate vs love, Huxley and Orwell were both right. It's active vs passive control, it's not so antagonistic but complementary.
Huxley vision is stronger and came first, because consumerism and capitalism will not have people easily consuming/spending on something they just hate.
But look how now they obviously have to use active control to get people to accept the shit they throw at us, which get bigger and bigger... The comic was just made too early to see the whole picture of western society.
