No man, it is fucked. That is why people who have been in relationships for five years have separate apartments. One of the factors in high housing prices in Canada.

Canada could get worse under Trudeau. He's poised to limit gun laws even further, even though he's protected with dozens of armed guards. Protecting your family with a gun from a person attacking your family with a gun will soon be illegal under ALL circumstances. Enjoy your children, your spouse and yourself being killed.
>>
>>80807741
It's not going to be a big problem in the east, there is not a lot of gun killing here. Don't really know about the west provinces.

Harper just added self defence laws a few years ago, called 'Castle Law", in which you can protect yourself, your home, your property and your family. Two events caused this, a convenience store owner that restrained a robber and a guy that had his home fire bombed and he shot a warning shot in the air. Both of these cases resulted in charges of the people protecting their places.
>>

That infographic is incorrect. Common-law for immigration purposes is separate than common-law for tax purposes, and separate than common-law for spousal purposes.

True, common-law is after 1 year for immigration purposes, but that is only if you want to sponsor somebody.

Common law for spousal support in Ontario is 3 years, and even then there are no property rights.

This one isn't that bad, but it sets up the question of whether a spouse would be able to kill a husband and then simply say "he was battering me".

So long as the burden was on the spouse to prove it was battering, and she made attempts to leave the situation or inform authorities, I can get behind it.

It's 2016, leaf. A wife and family is the worst investment you can make. Women have shit for brains and usually bring nothing of value to the household then demand a 50/50 split (more if you were dumb enough to give her children).

The only woman I've ever trusted is the one who went homeless with me through a brutal winter. She had other options, but, since they weren't extended to me, she stayed with me, living in a car, surviving off ramen noodles and truck stop showers for 6 months.

I trust her, but she's the exception, not the rule. Married her 5 years ago.

Ever read about the Decembrist wives in Russia? Their husbands were exiled to Siberia by the ruling class for dissent. The wives left comfort and luxury for cold and hardship. They stood by their husbands through every challenge and the Decembrists went on to bring life, knowledge and culture to Siberia.

She sounds like a keeper anon

I just imagine myself old, sitting on a generic park bench thinking back to how it all USED to be. I'm pretty sure the world is just gonna get nuked by then.
>>
>>80806832
Yes it's out of context.
It's different time periods for each province for one. In Alberta you need at least 2 years to be considered common-law for example. Also you need to generally file your taxes together or apply for common-law/civil union for it to go into effect.
In the court codependency needs to be established since they are all synonymous in Canada. Codependency = civil union = common-law here. So say you and your girlfriend are on eachothers insurance slips, that would imply codependency and possibly that you are in a common-law relationship. For just general roommates that never really share finances, insurance, loans, etc. it will be very hard to prove codependency and the laws regarding common-law relationships will very rarely, if ever, apply.

The OP image is a massive overexaggeration and generally none of it applies to the real world and it's just people freaking out over nothing.
>>

>>
>>80813873
The laws do have impact, but they impact people that are in common-law relationships. You don't just magically enter a common-law relationship against your will. You most likely did paperwork to get there.
Common-law partners often share insurance since you get it discounted, you get the same tax benefits as married couples, and you get the same mortgage/loan benefits as married couples as well.

I assure you, if you are in a common-law relationship you would definitely know it, unless of course you suffer amnesia, alzheimer's, dementia, etc.

>>
>>80813730
And if women are equal to men, shouldn't men get alimony, custody and child support at least some of the time? What makes women so special that they deserve those benefits if they're equal to men and don't need to be propped up?

I think feminists hate themselves and other women far more than anyone on here does. They put on a girl power image, but self-respecting people don't need or want handouts and privileges.

the US has Common Law marriage too.
>>
>>80814431
Marriage takes more paperwork and legally they do require you to have a ceremony (at least in Alberta they force you to do one) which means you have to find a commissioner and two witnesses and do all the paperwork even if you don't want a formal ceremony. It's a waste of time and money since common-law/civil unions are equivalent to marriage here.
You can also go the registry office and declare yourself in a civil union any time you want, even if you haven't been living together for 2 years or whatever it is where you live. You just let them know and sign the papers and you're good to go. Cheaper than marriage (I believe it's free actually) and no ceremony requirement.
>>
This basically only applied to meth heads and natives

>You don't just magically enter a common-law relationship against your will.

Yeah, nah. Cheating is definitely shitty but not death penalty shitty. I do, however, believe the cheating spouse should get diminished or even zero compensation/rights during the divorce.

You cheated? You get zero shared marital assets. You also don't get custody of the children. Etc.
