As a young conservative Christian, Christians are the most loving and tolerant people I've ever met.
I come to the politics board to ask: How did the most loving people in America start being portrayed as the most hateful? It just doesn't make sense.
Is it because we don't support abortion? Science is on our side, babies don't just magically go from "fetus" to "living" once they leave the uterus. Abortion is not humane. Even if some people believe we're misguided, you can hardly call it a hateful position that we take.

They are loving and tolerant under two conditions

I for one, got a lot of leeway when talking interracting with Christians, they were polite and courtious. However I also met a lot of people who were kicked out of their house, denied by their parents, divorced by their spouses etc for not being Christian. If you are a total foreigner you are okay, but If you are not and don't fit into them then things go bad.
Just my observations as an outside to the biblebelt culture, closet gays and closet atheists were very real phenomenons about a decade ago, I don't know whether it is the same now. In a way I dealt with them the exact same way I'm dealing with conservative Turks here: nod smile and move on don't argue, don't stand out and you'll be fine. But the moment you don't you are ostracized and ostracized pretty badly.

Christians, especially in the US, like to profile themselves based not so much on what they like (families, Jesus, love, stupidly sweet wine they pretend is blood and fancy stained glass) but rather by what they DON'T like.. The breakdown of the family is one of the major causes of societal breakdown, of poverty and crime. It affects everyone. Abortion infringes on the freedom of the baby you murdered. It all matters. My opposition to gay marriage, aside from the negative effect such a family arrangement has on children they intend to raise, is not wholly religious, though. It makes no sense. Why would government incentivize something that has zero benefit to society. The only reason government has any role to play in marriage is children. Gays are poor parents and they can't reproduce on their own anyway. It has a negative effect. Not worth encouraging. They can live together if they want.
