If your population is the original, magyar population, why do hungarians in general look so european? In fact, most hungarians look average for this region.
Plain and simple, population doesn't change that easily. Mass migrations simply don't happen that often to the scale of completely displacing natives. Saying it was "a few thousand nomad horsemen" is hyperbole - maybe initially they did represent a sizeable amount of the population, enough to rule the people that were there (which isn't that hard, being a militarized nomad horde that recently settled next to an otherwise demilitarized population)but that doesn't mean it had a lasting effect on genetics, and that is clearly visible.

Your points on assimilation are correct, however the invading Hungarians were most likely not a mass of swarthy Mongols, but a coalition of different tribes (most of them of Turkic and not East-Asian origin), and that would explain the lack of Asian genetics. Our linguistics also support this theory, most Finno-Ugric words are the ones which are related to hunting, fishing etc., while the words which relate to nomadic lifestyle are of Turkic origins. But the truth is that we don't know quite enough about our origins, especially before Byzantine sources started mentioning Hungarians (as Turks, inb4 WE WUZ ROACHES AND SHEIT).
