Yeah Christian mysticism in general is a pretty wide (and fascinating) umbrella term for lots of different stuff.
Within the contemplative tradition though, it's been fairly set in stone since the middle ages- it goes through ebbs and flows, but Thomas Keating did a lot to revive it in recent decades (and even earned himself a sort-of indirect dig from the church, but nothing formal)
It's experiential, it's not really something that can be understood until you've gone through it.
I'd highly recommend reading St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa de Avila's material, they're Mother Church-approved so all good on the heresy front (though their material is basically the same as stuff people like Marguerite Poerete were burned for. Kind of just depended on the times you lived in, it seems)
I have a copy of Poerete's 'The Mirror of Simple Souls' on the way, it's supposed to be excellent.

This is actually one area which has triggered the church throughout the centuries. SOME contemplative authors (not all) advocated the position that a person in a state of divine union (as I understand it, who has passed through the Dark Night of Spirit, of St. John of the Cross) doesn't really need the church, as they have a much more direct communion with God. That's not to say that eucharist wouldn't assist the process, but more like I could see the church getting antsy about this kind of tradition organising itself in any way.
That said, there ARE groups doing Centring Prayer sessions (Thomas Keating's version of the basic contemplative meditation, e.g. in The Cloud of Unknowing), I know of one near me, so it does have some kind of following.
It'd definitely help to win back some of the crowd who wander over to buddhism and hinduism because they think Christianity is spiritually unfulfilling. Catholicism has just a large corpus of mystical material as those religions.
One area I'd also love to read up on more are the writings from the early Christian period here in Ireland. It's a fascinating time, there are still holy wells in my home area dating from the period- they were originally pagan sites, and one I can think of is still aligned to light up with the midwinter sun, like Newgrange, it's an amazing piece of heritage

IIRC, Orthodoxy also professes one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. There were some oddball technical disagreements, but it also aligned with things like the Roman Empire splitting in half, and nobody really talks too much about that, so I don't give it all a whole lot of credence in the absence of justification.
