From a legal point of view, if you can afford to not shoot them lethally, then you can afford to not shoot them at all. You only have a right to kill someone when they are a threat to you. After he shot them and he fell down the stairs how were they still a threat to him? The only possible way they could still be a threat to him is if they were armed. If he truly thought they were armed he wouldn't have taken the time to taunt them, move their bodies, and walk over to them to shoot them at point-blank range because all of the time it took him to do that, would have given them plenty of time to shoot him. Someone he truly believed they were armed and still a threat to them would not have behaved the way he did after they were shot and fell down the stairs.
I mean forget the first one for now, at least when he moved his body he was dead, so if you still want to believe that taunting and walking over to him to shoot him at point-blank range don't disprove that he was still in fear for his life then fine. But for the second one when he moved her body she was still alive, so he would have been able to tell if she was armed and still a threat. Then after moving her live body he finally finished her off. How can you still honestly believe, that for at least the second one he truly believed she was armed and a threat to him?
When he executed them they were not threats to him, and his defense of think they were armed are disproven (undeniably for the second one) by his actions after they were initially shot and fell down the stairs. He is not a judge, jury, nor executioner and had no right to execute them. Shooting in self defense is ok, shooting someone for any other reason than that is murder, and he clearly wasn't defending himself from anything and he was clearly not in fear for his life. He had no right to execute them.

Those concepts are not mutually exclusive.
You can easily defend yourself in the heat of the moment in fear of your life, realize they were unarmed, and children, and then decide that you wont get a fair trial and try to hide the bodies.
The fact it was self defense in fear of your life remains, and he was clearly shaken up aftewards, and even expressed remorse at one point towards the end talking to himself about how he tries to be a good person.
