An unfortunate outcome, but there are very few things that the officer could have done about it and a ton of things that the intruder had done wrong. Bi-polar can be a very serious disorder if left unchecked, and him being off the meds is bad news. The guy was also just starting college (high stress environment if unprepared) and going downhill fast, so it is disturbing to only hear about the intruder's side of the story from his uncle and friends. Sad.
Given the intruder's condition, it would not be reasonable to associate this incident alone with BLM in general. If BLM decides to pick up on this as evidence to support their cause, however, all bets are off. Given whom they have lent support to in the past, I would not be surprised.
What if we push this hard, as if it really was an excessive use of force by the off duty officer or that the officer provoked/deserved it. Now is the time, the eyes are on BLM. It doesn't even sound outlandish, like something they wouldn't do on their own.
