This, fucking this. I grew up in the country, but went to college and got a compsci degree, now work in the city. Just about everyone I interact with that grew up as an urbanite is fucking useless. They lack critical logic skills because they were never challenged as kids. They expect everything to be handed to them and they expect everything to instantly work.
The smartest people I know come from small town America or from the sticks. Some of them just have to live in the city, or at least commute to the city, for their line of work.
Its funny. Take an urbanite who thinks they're super intelligent out into the country and have them camp for a few days and they'll be pissing themselves trying to figure out what to do. If it isn't instant and electric they can't figure it out. The country is a humbling experience because it reminds me what the world is really like for a lot of folks.

I have developed a theory, that cities make people into complete assholes. The higher amount of noise and social interaction stresses the brain and just makes people into jerks.
And this fits with a theory I saw the other day here, that more information intake causes people to become more hedonistic and self destructive.
This makes sense, from a pharmacological/neurochemical standing, as well as just plain common sense.
And Buddhist monks and Amish folk pretty much confirm the theory as positive.
City life can easily overload the brain, and probably leads to more self-destructive behavior in people.

Going to college is not some sort of magical intellectual bringing up that some people assign to it. It does exactly what it says on the tin; it teaches you your chosen subjects.
