Russia was the first country to officially recognize israel. Truman recognized it himself but it took over 1 year for congress to do so, the russians took about 1 week. The people of eastern europe despised jews and did not allow them into their institutions before WWII. The belief was that allowing jews into government would bring the whole country under jewish control. During stalin's reign, he(a non-jew but married to one) purged high ranking jewish bolsheviks, this continued into WWII. He knew they would turn on him and so an anti-jewish mindset never left the eastern bloc. During the soviet union's existence, jews did not openly practice as they do in the west, seeing an orthodox jew is a new experience for some who lived under communism.
So while the soviet union recognized israel, traded intelligence with israel(see johnathan pollard), stalin killed off much of the jewish bolsheviks and people always rememered not to trust jews. After WWII, many jews "disappeared" by converting to christian denominations and changing their name. Much of the original jewish population was assimilated after WWII, this is one of the reasons orthodox jews were so uncommon during the USSR.
