The Krauts and Russkis weren't allies, they had an uneasy non-aggression pact.
National Socialism and Bolshevism were incompatible ideologies and Russia has traditionally been a reluctant western ally.

From what I understand:
Non aggression pact between the two, but Germany had intel that Russia was gearing up some serious shit for a war. Germany was afraid that Russia would have enough time to build up a big enough war machine to assfuck Germany while it was busy elsewhere, so they tried to mount a pre-emptive strike.
They overextended in Russia, obviously, but in other places as well. I think their best bet was to land grab the Germanic lands that they could and stalemate the Allies into a treaty well before America got involved. Later, the Allies would perhaps be forced to help Germany hold back Russia, or be okay with Russia spreading communism pretty much everywhere in Europe.
Im not sure if it's universal agreement that Germany wasn't going to be able to win a full out war vs Brit and America; like their war economy was tipping to unsustainable levels pretty quickly.
Not sure how the Japs couldve helped, aside from not bombing Pearl Harbor and perhaps cutting into Russia from China? Did Russia have decent oil resources then? That was one of the reasons Japan was incited into warring with America, iirc. (Trade embargos )
