2 gauge? Good luck buying cheap or stacking deep. Pick up a box or two of 12ga buck or slugs every paycheck and stash em' in a .50 cal ammo can. I'm also filling 40mm cans with Wolf Gold and buying extra mags as money permits.

Hardened steel will be bad for your bore when the high G launch pushes them through the wad. You can do it, but plan for a shortened barrel life. I'm not sure of any meaningful benefit from it, though. It won't penetrate as well as a good, old fashioned slug. The juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze.
