Today is the Upper House election in Japan.

Ruling LDP and its allies are set to win more than 2/3 of contested seats.

That would enable Shinzo Abe cabinet's long-sought goal of re-writing Japanese post-WWII constitution.

This wouldn't only involve repealing article 9, which ensures that Japan is a pacifist country, but also strengthen PM's emergency powers, restrict press freedom, abolish separation of church and state and promote nationalism.

That would be a major setback for Japanese democracy and would set Japan on a path toward illiberalism.

Getting rid of Article 9 is a mere formality at this point. They've already rebuilt their Navy and are in the process of upgrading their air defenses. Probable war with China is the source of this, and Japanese rearmament has been desirable to the US for a while.
>>
The emergency clause is retarded anyway and if Abe wants to change Article 9 or any part of the constitution there has to be a national referendum on it.

Unless the US military rapes 50 people in one weekend combined with China air striking a Japanese island I don't think half the country would vote to change A9.

As stupid as Democracy is, it's not nearly the biggest problem Japan is facing. The problem is 100 years ago, Japan was by far the most powerful country in the region, in the face of a highly divided China, a malfunctional Russia and a bunch of regionally governed European countries. Now that's obviously not the case. If Japan wants to be relevant in years to come, Abe and his cabinet will need to find a way to seriously incentivise having children. Birthrates need to steeply rise otherwise it's irrevocably fucked.

wrong. japan is re-arming because they plan on kicking the US out. they're tired of seeing the US start proxy wars via niggers and muslims in countries, and invading when nigger rapists get executed by cops.

they actually extended a peace treaty to china, but the terms were rejected by far right chinese hawks in xi's cabinet.

rebuilding the japanese army is the perfect economic stimulus to replace their QE
>>
Japan needs to triple or at least double their military spending, which is what US policymakers have been pushing them to do for a long time now.

I think Trump's threats to abandon alliance partners that don't even bother investing an appropriate level of resources for their own defense helped tip the scales.

the child would hold both crowns and be the sovereign of japan and the commonwealth nations, but he would not hold the countries in personal union since they have separate constitutions and separate parlaiments (just like the queen in the commonwealth). japan would not be a part of the commonwealth because that's a diplomatic agreement made between those countries, but i suppose japan could petition to join it, though it would be a lengthy diplomatic and legislative effort

some of their national heroes are famous accountants

they invaded china to retake it from the british, portuguese, and mongols. they saw china as a long term project wherein they could invest capital and use teh chinese as the world's largest country/colony (and soon to be most educated) to enrich the japanese

they built more rail lines and power plants in korea and china than existed in all of japan, and double that of any other colonial power, including the british

they're not warlike. they're financiers. they didnt' even want to fight the US but the US claimed more or less all of SEA, which was unacceptable, and they would fight to the death for their country because unlike us, they don't worship niggers.

that doesn't mean they're warlike

abe was spearheading a right wing movement to support china's claim in the SCS, kick america's onl nuclear platform in asia out (that's japan,) intensify funding in china for development and poverty, and cut off trade significantly with the US, in exchange for japan re-arming and lessening anti-japnese rhetoric. crucially, it wold break japan as the backbone of anti-chinese sentiment in vietnam, philippines, thailand, malaysia, indonesia, and taiwan, which US power in the region depends on. it's pretty humbling for japan, which signals that japan is more afraid of the US.

the chinese rejected it because their war hawks made their career on anti-japanese sentiment. china is actually having EXTREME amounts of trouble shifting to anti- US sentiment because of historical precedent. xi is literally purging half of the party in order to make it happen though. xi is a good dude. I suspect he'll force the acceptance of a second japan proposal in some few years. japan is rearming anyway, which hints that they just can't go public with the agrement yet

1. modern war doesn't kill tons of people
2. china is distancing itself from n. korea. they're just a mad dog china uses to check US intrusion into the area. and it works well.
3. war produces a system whereby people NEED to be promoted for merit. without war, people can let an incompetent slob take over and slowly destroy the country, war necessitates common sense. common sense leads to rposperity and masculinity, which can then fund children.

what men lack is the status to form families. war provides that. in fact, I'm sure some of them, coming back from war, will have 2 wives and 6 or 8 kids. my grandpa had 9 when he came back from ww2.

europe is the more threatening theater though. the us just moved nuclear platforms into poland.
>>
Good. I want Japan to be able to have a strong military. I want Japan to be a powerful ally that doesn't rely on us to hold their hand for everything. I want our military to pull out of Japan so we stop wasting money paying for their defense.

The Japs will never stop being our ally just because they become a strong nationalist nation. They know what happens when they fuck with us, and they know what happens when they are peaceful with us. Let's have the U.S. and Japan stand side by side.

>>
>>80435354
china has proven itself to be highly competent recently. japan recognizes this.

further, the dysfunction in america does not go unnoticed by japan, and never has. our alliance with them was always predicated on america keeping its promises, which we've been breaking by letting niggers run amok raping everything, then blaming japs for racsm.

the straw that broke the camels back was in the 90s when clinton sold china nuclear technology. japan realized we were complete idiots at that point, and almost immediately the japan hawks began organizing to support chinese hegemony. foreign trade with china and japan rose 5x in ONE YEAR after clinton sold china nuketech.

you arent thinking this through clearly

modern war isn't about shooting. it's economic and policy. no land war will EVER commence because then nukes get involved, unequivocally.

any way that DOES take place will be for control over shipping and air routes. when carriers are sunk, that's a defacto win, becuase it ENFORCES the consequences o the result. one country or the other will have ocntrol over shipping and air routes, and will continue to have the economy function, the other party can ACCEPT the terms of surrender at that point, or withdraw.

there will be no land invasion, and no more deaths than are in any given naval force.

Japan would become like Syria in all out war. Why? Because China et.al. would be fighting with America and it's allies with Japan in the middle. It would fuck them.

you sound hysterical

I understand how they think as well as any foreigner can, possibly.

the're not going to nuke anyone because there are enough nukes in every arsenal on the planet to kill all life on the planet 5 times over

they act hyperagressive selectively, such as in the SCS, to AVOID war. their actions in the SCS enforce a defacto outcome, it's called lawfare. any action the US takes at this point would simultaneously commit 6 separate nations to a war over a stupid rock. that's why ALL we do about it is fucking complain, because there's nothing else we can do

you really think the chinese are hyper aggressive? america started FOUR wars since the 90s, three of them based on lies.

the chinese are just securing shipping routes in the SCS. if achinese ship sinks now, it's VERY CLEAR WHERE AND WHICH POWER ALLOWED that ship to be shot down by us subs.

if you look at the map, it's VERY ambiguous where the exclusion military zones would end. the US could have exploited that by sinking a chinese ship and allowing the philippines, thailand, vietname, malaysia, AND taiwan to all bicker amongst each other who had information about the american submarines and who should take the fall and get punished by china.

the way china carved up the waters, there's NO MORE plausible deniability that if some chinese airliner gets shot down like in egypt or malaysia, there's NO MORE excuse that a country can say they didn't know the US was operating military in their borders.

fucking get a clue

Modern-day parties are aligned with Israel, though. That's the important part.

The reason Japan wants out from under our thumb so badly is because they see Israel pulling our strings like puppets.

They won't back out of an American alliance, as some of the people in this thread believe. People saying that Japan hates America more than they hate China are fucking idiots.

>The Soviet is not a Russian but a Jewish institution. Nor is it the invention of Russian Jews of the present time, a new political device which has been set up as a vehicle of the ideas of Lenin and Trotsky; it is of ancient Jewish origin, a device which the Jews themselves invented to maintain their distinctive racial and national life after the conquest of Palestine by the Romans.

Somehow I have a difficult time believing that.

Of course, but the JSDF is already a lot more powerful than a lot of people give them credit for.
A capable navy, some advanced aircraft, and their own domestically designed/produced tanks. The basis is there for a very solid military and the only thing really lacking for the island nation is a real aircraft carrier (Which the current Constitution forbids).
The only thing is that Japan having its own military may mean the closure of American bases on Japanese land and Okinawa, which will be welcomed by some, bu would also be a shame to both the communities that cater to them as well as those stationed there.

Killing themselves over merely going to war-torn countries doesn't help them look good.

For their sake, let's hope they're still not the fuck-ups I remember them to be:
>"The C-130 crew was the first to spot the crash site 20 minutes after impact, while it was still daylight. The crew sent the location to Japanese authorities and radioed Yokota Air Base to alert them and directed a Huey helicopter from Yokota to the crash site. Rescue teams were assembled in preparation to lower Marines down for rescues by helicopter tow line. Despite American offers of assistance in locating and recovering the crashed plane, an order arrived, saying that U.S. personnel were to stand down and announcing that the Japan Self-Defense Forces were going to take care of it themselves and outside help was not necessary."
>"Although a JSDF helicopter eventually spotted the wreck during the night, poor visibility and the difficult mountainous terrain prevented it from landing at the site. The pilot reported from the air that there were no signs of survivors. Based on this report, JSDF personnel on the ground did not set out to the site the night of the crash."
>" Medical staff later found bodies with injuries suggesting that individuals had survived the crash only to die from shock, exposure overnight in the mountains, or from injuries that, if tended to earlier, would not have been fatal."

Let's not forget the lackluster support they gave during the 2011 Earthquake/Tsunami. They're still an anemic military "force" as far as I'm concerned.

the moment a 3dpd knocks on the door of an otaku you know he'll drop the comics.

you realize this all has happened in history before right? and the way it will go this time will be the same

example: in china when the mongols took over, they INTENSIFIED the usage of chinese characters, made merit promotions harder to get, intensified the use of the court dialect, intensified business regulation, because the mongols were too stupid to compete

>they retreat into their cartoons because japanese society became MORE harsh as a way to hedge out foreign influence, and hasn't relaxed

First off

>as a way to hedge out foreign influence

This is complete horseshit. It became harsh because of their economic downturn and their impending demographics collapse.

Nothing about their business culture is because of foreign influence. It's entirely because, at one time, the Japanese economy was great and businesses could afford to give their employees such wonderful benefits for working.

Now those days are over, Japanese businesses do not give employees the same amount of compensation as they did twenty years ago, and the end-result has been people retreating to neetism.

Their job market is super competitive
Anything less than a white-collar job is considered dishonor to the family, because at one time the economy was good enough to support it.

This is 100% a culture issue. Trying to argue that THIS is the result of foreign influence is dumb.

>these people would engage in normal social institutions if japan wasn't intentionally becoming toxic to force our foreign influence.
I can't even imagine the mental hoops you have to jump through to justify this. People crowd out modern society because they feel it has betrayed them. Becoming militaristic isn't going to solve this, and in fact would make it that much worse.

http://www.dijtokyo.org/doc/JS18_rahman.pdf

You can read an actual breakdown of what causes it instead of blaming it on them evil foreigners.

If you want the tl;dr: Here it is: Nothing about foreign influence anywhere on this chart. It's entirely about a once super competitive economy slowing down and facing an impending collapse.

Trying to blame that on America is just dumb.

They need to come to the conclusion that the collapse has everything to do with letting their corporations get away with murder.

And here we get to a tremendous root of the problem

A lack of any kind of social safety net. If you work somewhere, lose your job, or get injured. Then you're less able to qualify for benefits than if you just became a neet in the first place. This is because of the suspicion and anger surrounding people who are seen to be 'job hoppers' or 'disabled'.

No. LDP is pushing for leveraging the current monetary deflation going on with the yen right now, by lowering interest rates and printing more money to stimulate higher wages.

The other major parties don't have such an approach to the economy, where Japanese people have been suffering big time since 2008 financial crisis.

So, people want to vote for LDP because they want better economic conditions. It just so happens that LDP is also pushing to change the Constitution for Japan to raise a standing army and declare war, which is something top politicians support more than anyone. The aging population thing is a bit overstated. The fact is that Japan is overpopulated, so in the long run the low birthrate is probably a good thing. There may some difficulties with providing for the elderly in the relative short term (the next few decades), but the celebrated Japanese work ethic and solidarity ought to be enough to overcome any austerity this brings.

The leaders know this, and it's why they are not in a rush to increase immigration.

Will that really be necessary or even desirable with drones and androids, though?

We're in no danger of getting rekt. China poses no threat at all (their entire militray is designed for a defensive war; they have virtually no capability to fight a war of aggression outside of China, certainly not outside of mainland Asia), and neither do Japan and Korea (we supply them with a large portion of their equipment).

However, the expense of maintaining the only military in the world that can fight virtually anywhere in the world on a moment's notice is ruinous for us, just as it was the expense of maintaining the legions that ultimately ruined ancient Rome.

And for those of us who are old enough to remember the end of the Cold War, it kind of feels like we were sold a bill of goods: the end of the USSR was supposed to mean that NATO was obsolete, and our troops would no longer need to be stationed all over the world to fight the Red Menace. But for some reason, Bush I and Clinton never got the memo, and then Bush II turned 9-11 into a license for perpetual war on multiple fronts. Despite all of the campaign promises, Obama hasn't really reversed course. Meanwhile, the national debt, which was under $1T when I was born, is now on the threshold of $20T and exceeds our GDP.

So no, I'm not afraid of losing a fight, I'm tired of paying so damned much just to avoid one. I want the rest of the world to take responsibility for defending itself.

Korea was at peace for centuries at a time. And so was Japan. The longest period of peace in European history is now and so far it barely lasted for 70 years and only thanks to the MAD.

Given how we're filling up our military with perverts now, this is more likely than you might think.

Can you suggest a source for Japanese news in English that is NOT a bunch of leftists, though?

Pretty sure sankei doesn't have a english site that I know of.

The way Korea and Japan had peace for centuries at a time was by total isolation, though. I don't think either one of them is looking to go back to that.

I always thought Japan Times were relatively left but not biased.

You're correct, they volunteered their own helicopters to go rescue people while the Japanese government was busy trying to decide which dick to suck to please the Diet.

I'm sure if the Yakuza had nuclear operators on staff, they would have gone and taken the plant that was malfunctioning, too.

No, they'll embrace open borders and minorities to combat the conservative extremism.

Again, extremism only causes extremism. Germany wouldn't be like how it is today if Hitler haven't gotten into power. The same could be said for any country but China

I don't buy the idea that Japan secretly wants to align itself with China. I could see the South Koreans doing that though.

Japan doesn't seem to be mentioned often in Western media unless it's about their scary declining population, the only solution of course being bringing in millions of foreigners because of Diversity!!1!

How is Abenomics working, by the way?

Thankfully Based Abe will put a stop to it.

It'll be easy to find ammo considering how many of the rapefugees have already been arrested.

I was talking about how Japanese and Korean cultures are apperentely warlike, what does isolation has to do with that? Leave Germans to themselves and they will find a reason to fight each other in a decade.

To be fair, local response to disasters is almost always faster and more efficiently handled than when the national government gets involved.

Well, except when the locals are niggers. That's why New Orleans was such a shitshow. When Irene fucked up New England in 2011, we didn't have these problems, even in places where whole towns were cut off from the outside world for days on end. Actually, when the army finally showed up, they mostly just got in the way and made a mess.
