ANTHONY, Minn. — A lawyer for the suburban police officer who fatally shot a black man during a traffic stop said on Saturday that the race of the driver, Philando Castile, played no role in how his client responded, and that the officer “was reacting to the presence of a gun” when he opened fire.
The comments from the lawyer, Thomas Kelly, provided the fullest accounting yet of Officer Jeronimo Yanez’s version of the shooting Wednesday night, even as many details remain unclear.
Officer Yanez, of the St. Anthony police, is on leave while state authorities investigate the shooting, which has prompted protests and raised questions about what role race might have played in the stop.
“The shooting had nothing to do with race and everything to do with the presence of that gun,” Mr. Kelly said in an interview, noting that Officer Yanez is Latino.
Mr. Castile “was not following the directions of the police officer,” Mr. Kelly said, but he declined to provide further detail.

The situation you'd find yourself in if the officer realizes you're concealing a weapon without telling is going to be way worse than any tension that might arise from letting him know, not worth it no matter how slim a chance.

Without giving to much detail, since I happen to do exactly what that officer does on a daily basis I can tell you. Nothing ever bad happens when you tell an officer you have a gun. Most states, not all but most require you if you possess a valid CCW to inform a police officer during any form of contact. (This does not mean you have to tell every fucking cop you see that you have a gun. If a cop says hi to you, you don't have to tell him you have a gun.) However on traffic stops, maybe you are the witness to a crime. Yes by definition you have too.
Normally however most cops don't give two shits if you have a gun on you legally. Unless the call is to check your CCW because somebody saw it. AKA all these douchers who wear skin tight shirts.
If you are pulled over, keep your hands on the wheel. Inform the officer that you have a weapon on you and a valid CCW. Most of the time the officer will ask you where your wallet/ID & papers are located. Tell him. He will say get it for me usually with the words slowly. Once done, you either get a ticket or go on your way.

Most officers probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger here, but legally, doing so is justified based on what I know about the incident (based on the girlfriends statements).

Not all permit holders carry everyday, everywhere. Good chance just because you have the license, doesn't mean your armed. Similarly, just because you don't have a permit, doesn't mean you are NOT armed. So knowing that information won't really make much of a difference besides giving the officer a false sense of security or a false reason to be on edge. Also it would be very costly to integrate that into your normal license information that comes up on a plate/id verification. They'll mostly just looking you up to confirm you are who you say you are so they have a record of having talked to you as well as to make sure you don't have any outstanding warrents. They don't care if you have a clean record or not really. Just doing their job to make sure they don't need to haul you in for something.
