I picked up a nugget on my 18th birthday for $160 and it fires like a laser. I put a scope on it and it is even more accurate over 500m. I even hit the sniper 1km shot with surplus rounds. Took a few attempts though

Well, it really depends. 7.62x39mm isn't nearly as available as .223.
So, I'd rather buy an AR than an SKS since you can make one for about $500 anyway, and for bottom dollar, you might be better off with just a .22 since the ammo is fucking everywhere, and you can find tons of used rifles for under 200 dollars.
Or pre-SHTF you could just buy a nugget and enough ammo to genocide a small Bosnian town.
