Their reason? Young males driving alone are "smugglers". Sure, they'll veil it, by saying that you look suspicious, or that driving alone is suspicious, or that having no luggage up front is suspicious, it doesn't matter. If a cop wants to search you, they're going to do it, regardless of whether they have reasonable suspicion or not.
While convictions require actual evidence (i.e. a crime was committed), simple traffic stops are easy ways to fuck with people you don't like or a way to search everyone for drugs on a slow day.
