Division and multiplication are equal operations, neither gets precedence and which operation is where is irrelevant.

In the op's sentence, you treat the 20/5 as as multiplication by a fraction yielding 20*(1/5)*(2*2). In this way, it doesn't matter if your next step is 4* (4) or 20*(4/5) the answer will always be 16.

Is this really accurate? I think I learned in class that multiplication preceded division, but learned well-before common core was instituted that division is solved before multiplication if the operation is to the left.

Anyway, they shouldn't it's equally right, because exams will have one right answer and the student could give the wrong one thinking that it was correct because they didn't follow correctly the order of operations. it's not arbitrary, the 5 and the bracket are connected. Part of dealing with the bracket as the first step is to expand it outwards and remove it from the equation entirely.

20/5(2*2) -> 20/5(4) ->20/20 = 1

20/5(2*2) -> 20/5(4) -> 4(4) = 16

try making it 20/5+(2*2) and your method makes more sense as there is a seperation between the 5 and the bracket so it might be seen as two sums. Some people might still argue it as 20/9 as the brackets are still badly done, but it visibly shows how you've been taught to do it.
