You can buy a Mossberg 88 for $190.
Get the 18.5" Defense version and you'll have a good 12 guage pump action for cheap.
This will do fine for home and property defense, not the best for offense though.
Run buckshot or slugs.

Heh. A CTR FDE & bolt assist autist like me? Although I use the Ergo fat grip in FDE on almost all of my builds. I like to use billet uppers and lowers so I can't use the BAD lever (have them on 2 polymer 22lr builds) but instead have the Phase 5 one piece that completely replaced the bolt release paddle to allow for clearance on billet uppers.

Where is the safest place to be as a white person these days? I'm a civil engineer and the wife is a nurse so we can work just about anywhere. Right now I'm living in semi-urban East coast city, but am considering moving into the Appalachian mountains. I know that the military are crawling all over there but I have a feeling when the happening happens they'll be more concerned with the metropolitan areas. I'd move to New Zealand if their gun laws were more lax and they weren't so close to the now expansionist China.

Pump action shotguns, like a Remington 870 are pretty much no maintenance. I clean mine at the end of pheasant season and leave it until next year.
AR/AK's aren't so bad provided you clean them after you use them or relube moving parts once a year, whichever comes first.
For storage, get a safe. And not one of the tin skin things at most sporting goods stores. Amsec makes nice safes. Handy for storing valuables/documents as well. Make sure to bolt it to the floor.

The only real difference is shell capacity, barrel length, choke, and ergonomics.
I have an 870 wingmaster with a full choke. It would likely be unwieldy for a home defense situation, but more powerful at range due to the full choke (less spread).
Shoot a couple models, read a bit on the differences, and buy the one that makes sense to you. Can't really go wrong.
