The KPA has numbers, but they have numbers of outmoded technology manned by a civilian population with inferior training. They also simply do not have the means of production to keep this war machine going for any lengthly campaign. They don't even have the resources to feed their population.
Let's say hypothetically that the Un does get a big enough dick to unleash rocket strikes against south targets and start rolling his tanks across the DMZ. The US and NATO would be obliged to lend aid. NK doesn't have the navy to keep the US shipping in check, and they would be totally reliant on china who would most likely be reticent to lend anything more than logistical supplies.
The US would perform surgical strikes on NKs nuclear facilities, in turn decimating its airforce. The war would be over in 3 months time when SK pushes over the DMZ and the US begins landing troops near pyongyang. As soon as the civilian population realizes that the US had food and doesn't want to murder them, NK changes its tune and reintigrates with SK.
Nobody wants to pay for this reintegration, and so the region gets destabalized anyway, most likely resulting in a full scale nuclear exchange between the US and china. But at least for a brief period of about 6 months, pun yun shi could be spirited away from NK to join me at my south pacific island paradise to ride out the end of the world.
