I hate to be le 2016 fag, but the success rate of pregnancies in the Western world has vastly improved in the past 100 years. Most of that can be credited to advances in medical science & tech but you can't deny that the prime time for pregnancy (defined here as maximum likelihood of good health of both mother and child) is well past the beginning of ovulation.
Polygamy is every guy's harem fantasy but it just isn't a stable or positive household for child-rearing.
