I understand that it is smart to move slowly and declare your actions as police can be jumpy and rightfully so. I remember once I was like 12 years old and my brother-in-law was driving my parent's van and got pulled over for speeding, he was completely clean but he was driving my parent's van so I knew where the registration was. I was sitting passenger and when he asked for license and regestration I reached into the glovebox because it was my parents van and I was looking around in there for it. He put his hand on his gun but didn't draw or shoot me. Even if he did draw and point I would agree with that being justified, but you don't need to pull the trigger.

Same here. It sounds cliche but put yourself in the officer's shoes. You want to go home at night and anyone you encounter could potentially be dangerous, especially blacks.
Now imagine you just stopped a black guy that says, "I'm carrying a gun" and then he reaches for his pocket shortly after saying that. You have to make a life or death choice right there. Do you trust him? Conventional wisdom (and statistics) says never relax.
If that black man had said, "My wallet is in my back pocket, may I reach for it?" then it would give time for the officer to prepare himself so he can say, yea go ahead and get your wallet. All these things are common sense if you think about it. Be PREDICTABLE. Declare ALL your intentions and then ask if you can act. Wait for the acknowledgement before you act otherwise you broke the first rule: be predictable.
These guys want to go home at night. Keep that in mind.

I was pulled over for expired tags (3 days past) and when the cop said so, I opened the door. He put a hand on the door and a hand on his gun, and I immediately froze and apologized, and he shut it on me and told me to wait in the vehicle while he ran my id.
When he came back, I again apologized and thanked him for not overreacting, given the climate of things (this was shortly after Mike Brown hit the ground) and he just nodded, but looked exasperated, like he has to deal with people jumping out of cars at any chance and having to decide to shoot or chase.
You do not do their job. You don't deal with the everyday mental judgements. I was in the wrong, got a ticket, paid it and updated my tags.

If you value your life, you should be predictable when you're dealing with people who can potentially kill you. You can spout all the statistics you want, but if you want to be safe and go home after a routine stop, just take the necessary precautions. It's really that fucking simple. And it works out great for everyone. Cops will know that they won't be dealing with a nigger who can't follow directions and you'll be satisfied knowing that you have an officer on your side when Obama declares martial law to stall a Trump victory on November 8.
