The show started off as a backlash against the prevalence of family sitcoms like The Cosby Show, Full House, and The Brady Bunch where all the kids were perfectly behaved angels that always learned a life lesson every episode. In that context, the show was hilarious and showed what many of actually experienced growing up - asshole friends calling each other names and making poop jokes.
Once it got big, like all cartoons, it got political. At least SP has managed to stay on both sides of the fence throughout its tenure.
