I live in baton rouge. Baton rouge cops are grade A assholes. I've had to deal with them a couple of times (speeding ticket, got caught urbexing, and they showed up before the EMS did when my idiot roommate smoked old mojo). Not making any judgement yet, from what I saw from the phone video that was published everywhere it looks like the cops were holding him down and shot him in the back as he was against the ground after they found a gun, but given that people aren't extremely irrational psychotic creatures (in general), my gut is telling me that no reasonable person, including the police officers, would murder someone like that, so there's probably something else that was going on.
That said, psychos do exist and some of them are in the police force.
I'll be waiting for more evidence to come out before drawing any conclusions.

Let's keep in mind why the cops where there in the first place. Someone called the police on Alton Sterling, stating that Alton had threatened him with a gun. The police dispatcher sent those two cops to that location with the description of Alton Sterling and to be advised that he has a gun.
Those cops showed up and followed protocol. All Alton Sterling had to do was obey the cops orders and allow himself to be arrested. The moment you choose to disobey a cop and resist arrest, that is the moment you have chosen to put your life on the line.
tl;dr - Alton Sterling disobeyed a cops order. He resisted arrest. He had a gun on his person and the cops were informed to be on the lookout for a gun. Cop sees the gun. Cop alerts his partner of the gun. Alton reaches for his gun. Alton gets shot. Alton is dumb and now Alton is dead.

I watched the video in question. The suspect was in a position where he could pose no possible threat to the officers on duty, even if reaching for his gun.
There was no way either officer feared for their safety or the safety of others. They were clearly in a position of advantage and had the suspect in a reasonable amount of control.
Given the suspect's size, the officer on duty may have felt the need to tackle him to the ground, which I do not fault him for. But a taser shot or quick punch to the temple could have stopped the suspect in question if he was actually reaching for an officer's sidearm.
I don't know what motivated the officer to shoot. After 10+ years on the force, there's no way I could justify what I saw. This could have ended with the suspect in cuffs with an intense headache.
I get that all of you kids are fascinated by drama and racial tension, but that doesn't change how the law is written, just to meet your fancy ideas of how things *should* work in real life.

This additional footage proves my case. There's no way this suspect had an effective means to pose a threat to either officer even if he had the strength of the Incredible Hulk. The officer at his head had enough control of the situation to incapacitate him, not kill him.
