Hey, /pol/. Black guy reporting.
In the wake of recent events involving the death of Alton Sterling at the hands of Baton Rouge police, I'd like to confront the whole "they should just comply" meme.
I'm a college-educated IT professional. I work an office job. But that doesn't stop the police from harassing me. Of the several times I've been wrongfully taken into custody, I've had my share of being manhandled by the police.
What didn't matter was how compliant I was, or how careful I was, or how polite I was.
No sane man wants to be slammed onto the hood of a police cruiser in front of his frightened children, only to have the case later dismissed against me because there was absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing: The police simply claimed that my behavior was "suspicious" on my way to check my mail in front of MY HOUSE--the one I bought in the suburbs--after my new neighbors saw me and reported my presence in "their" neighborhood.
To this day, I have never received so much as a traffic or parking ticket. I've never been convicted of a crime, nor cited as a suspect.
But that doesn't stop an angry police sergeant who's frothing at the mouth like an angry dog looking for confrontation.
My guess is that /pol/ would rather blame stereotypical niggers and statistics than the PUBLIC SERVANTS who are PAID TO DO THEIR JOBS.

Actually, it does matter how compliant you are, because if you hadn't been compliant your ass would've gone to jail. Compliance isn't optional, if you do not comply with the police within the bounds of their authority, you're guilty of resisting arrest.
If a cop beats your ass with a baton when you're complying, you sue the department for a gorillion dollars and laugh all the way to the bank. If you DON'T comply, you get shot. It's an easy choice. Always comply, even if they are in the wrong.

The point of the police is to effectively enforce the law but also to prevent crime, and they can use whatever statistical knowledge they have to maximise their success.

What bothers me about the shooting is that the guy was tackled to the ground rather than the officers simply calling for backup. One cop pinned down the mans arms and lower body while the other sat over his upper body and slowly and deliberstely pulled out his gun. Regardless of whether or not the suspect had a gun on him is a bit irrelevant at this point. At this point I would argue that it would be damn near impossible to successfully pull a gun at this point given the way his arms were pinned down, but even if he did, the man would not be in the wrong. He was tackled and had a gun pulled on him by officers. This is not normal police procedure and he would have every right to fear for his safety.
Though honestly, I kind of doubt he was even reaching for his gun or was even a serious threat of using it. Given how easily he was tackled to the ground, and how very clearly unathletic the man was, he probably was not going to be able to summon the strength to throw the cop sitting on his lower body off of him and then get his gun.
And then there's the number of shots fired.
Now I'm not saying "all cops are racist", like far too many people conclude, but there is very clearly a problem with some of the people we are allowing to wear uniform.

How did it happen for you? For me, it happened when I took a year out of uni because I was basically living as a degenerate and failing. I had to move back in with my mother, got a nightshift job where I didn't speak to anyone and I literally spent all my free time just walking around the countryside and thinking, just thinking about what's going on in the world, thinking circular thoughts, thinking about bullshit. Just thinking and thinking, completely cut off from society for about 6 months. I just recently got back into looking at politcs after the EU referendum, I used to come here because I liked the memes and banter but now I mostly just lurk because the rest of my time is spent reading, exercising and thinking. It's hard to pinpoint exactly when, but I've always been skeptical of authority. Even as a child. Combine that with seeing my government behave with impunity while disregarding it's people's interests made me start to question. /pol/ has provided the rest of the fuel.
I have always loved justice. I began my journey toward the legal profession in my early teens and have stayed that course for over a decade now. Being a huge fan of debate in high school helped. It made me more critical even earlier. Now I come here to share this discourse, sharpen my own and recruit for the coming struggle.
People like us can smell the change in the air, and we are far from a small minority. We need to let each other know, and build off of one another.
Also luls are important. Aside from prep work there's little we can do, so it's nice to come and laugh at the insane shit in the world. That and video games help me push the impending conflict into the back of my mind when I need a morale boost.
