In the opening sections, he deals with what happens when a scientific paradigm is established, let's use the example of evolution by natural selection. Anyone with a high school education can pick up a copy of Darwin and grasp a significant portion of it, the same cannot be said of contemporary peer-reviewed journals. Unfortunately, as any given field matures and its inquires become increasingly complex, the knowledge of the scientific community breaks away rapidly from the common knowledge of the masses. Now, add in bias, etc. and you've got a recipe for creating science deniers.

I can track the ISS and many other satellites and look at them with my own eyes, either with the naked eye or with a telescope.
You can do basic experiments with the alignment of stars and planets and over the course of some weeks, you can make your own good maps.
