One thing to note is that American Football, unlike European Football, prizes strength and size. As a result, ex-players tend to be large, and tend to develop eating and lifestyle habits designed to facilitate the gaining of mass. When they then get older, and stop exercising, they keep this natural size and mass gaining lifestyle, but it comes as fat rather than muscle. European footballers have to be quick and lithe, meaning that they do not have the reason to gain such fat.
Probably not the main reason for this, and obviously it's a cherry picked image, but still something to think about.
