Top Gear US should have been a warning to the BBC what happens when you hire actors - you have to chop huge portions of the show to bring it in range of the actors abilities.

Clarkson has assaulted and insulted plenty of people while at the BBC and the BBC has dutifully covered up/apologized/etc... for him before.
Maybe he was a demanding personality (although not over the top) and the BBC brass tried bluffing him into apologizing and he called their bluff? I know their contracts were up to be renewed though so it was on BBC to keep covering up for Clarkson or not and not renew his/their contracts.
