Trump is best explained as a response to the establishment being further and further removed from the populace. The establishment had this election all planned out, with it being a Bush vs Cllinton battle. Clinton winning in the end because Jeb was a mess.
Trump on the other hand sweeps in, isn't afraid to be openly anti-PC and says shit that a lot of people are still afraid to say in the open. Bernie, in a lot of ways, was the same way but for the left. He was very far from the "watered down" liberal ideas that the establishment prefers.
Trump has genuine support because he is saying what the populace want to hear. He wants to turn back to protectionism and nationalism. Things many people feel have died in the West. He says he wants to make the American middle class successful and worth something again, and get the leeches off their backs. Trump has genuine support because he has talked about things genuine Americans care about.
