Animism, which ultimately is a "you are what you eat" religion is only found in some aspects of Hinduism, it's not all of it. I have a theory Hinduism is composed of an amalgamation of many religions, some of them are ancestor worship instead.
My current theory on the origins of religions is that they're either animism or ancestor worship, basically either "you are what you eat" or "you are everything that came before you." Hinduism is essential to researching religion on both a primitive and highly advanced level, getting a genuine opinion from actual, real Hindus is extremely important. It's an expert opinion.

There's this... well existence, called the "Brahman", not to be confused with Brahma (a deity in Hinduism) or Brahmins (priests) who are also referred to as Brahmans
The Brahman is the supreme existence, the ultimate reality. It is why everything exists and its why everything will continue to remain in existence. Its something that can't be really explained in mere words I suppose
I guess you could say its something that's akin to an omnipotent being in Hindu lore
Anyways, all the different gods in Hinduism are naught but different forms in which the Brahman manifests
The three main forms of the Brahman are the three main deities of Hinduism
Namely - Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva
Vishnu is the one who is responsible for keeping the world in existence and thus is referred to as a "preserver"
Brahma is the one who created the universe and all that constitute it
Shiva is the one who destroys, i.e the destroyer of all that isn't meant to be (usually demons i.e rakshasas)

There's no specific part in Hinduism which coerces you to have to go to a temple. The faithful visit temples regularly, those who are more free with their belief visit from time to time
You may go to a temple whenever you please, there's no specific day where we have to visit a temple, (Christianity has sermons on Sunday IIRC) although different variants of Hinduism consider certain days to be "auspicious" to their specific deity
But then again, this differs from people to people, so there might be people who have to visit temples at least once per week
There are several constituents of Hindu worship, but the most popular one is Panchayatana puja, i.e five deties, Shiva, Vishnu, Devi/Durga, Surya and Ganesha.

Don't know about the slums in Kolkata but I live in Delhi. There are plenty of slums here, I used to feel pity for them until I got to know that they get almost free ration (grains and oils), free water and electricity.
