It goes beyond the accent though, there's a certain directness about the way Americans communicate that makes them seem stupid to us. When we talk, we leave quite a lot unsaid and let context, body language, facial expression etc say the rest. We imply a lot of things to and infer a lot of things from others. Americans just can't do that for some reason, everything must be spelled out in plain English and that just makes them seem a bit dim to us.

There are many American accents to be honest. The west coast accent sounds saccharine, sterile and contrived. The southern accent sounds either aristocratic of absolutely retarded without there seeming to be much in between. The Midwest country accent sounds naive, friendly and simple.
As a general Americans sound loud, dense and self absorbed with very little noise to their characters and very little authenticity to their character. I think part of the reason the Americans seem fake, is because we are exposed to so many Americans on TV and entertainment.
