I don't know much about Zappa but he seems pretty based from the little I have heard.
I was younger I was really into the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their main guitarist over the years (John Frusciante) had the opportunity to join Zappa's band when he was an 18 year old guitar phenom. He opted for the Chili Peppers instead because Zappa had a strict no drug use policy for his bandmembers and Frusciante wanted to be a rock n roll degenerate. He would later quit the band for many years shooting heroin every day before eventually getting his shit back together.
Even back when I first heard this story (bluepill days) I couldn't help but respect Zappa's no-nonsense outlook.

If anyone is interested, I found this interview a few years back and found Zappa's views on censorship and the effects of trends on the fabric and make up of Western society quite interesting. The way he deals with some of the questions the audiences poses to him in such a collected and structured way still to this day awes me. Truly a man of wisdom and not (as many contemporary media outlets attempted to portray him) just another degenerate rock star. Anyone that says he's a cringey reddit-tier musician is a fucking idiot. You have to remember most if not all TV stations at the time, whilst wanting to capitalize and profit from the publicity of the latest youth rock crazes, they were still very conservative and had to pander to an older generation that was somewhat out of touch with that aspect of counter culture.
