I would say every able-bodied man in America has a duty to own and know how to operate and field service his own rifle. Our country would not have been if it had not been for that sort of man.
Whether you choose to accept your duty or not is your decision and you're free to choose. I think an armed citizenry is a polite citizenry and one that is respected by it's peers and it's government. As a Brit I would encourage you, and any other man of any other country, to do the same. If you can fulfill your duty then there's no harm in not doing it, other than you may be out some cash to have gone out and bought a rifle.
