Parishes kept records over new births, marriages and so on.There were also regular censuses that kept track of farms and households, so you can look up everyone who lived at a specific farm or household, their relations, their jobs, their age and their profession. Even live-in servants are listed, and there seems to have been quite a few of them based on the records I've looked through.
I've actually seen the signature of my great great great grandfather in an old church book. It's all searchable and available online, and most of the church books have been scanned.
On top of that, one side of my family are historical figures in a small community outside my city where my great great grandfather was mayor, and there's actually a book about them and their lives. I also have pictures of my father's side of the family going back 150 years.

As a genealogy enthusiast I've naturally checked for any such genetic short circuits. So far, nothing. (I've got a fully covered tree 6 generations back, and most branches are 7-9 generations, som more than 10). This is somewhat surprising considering that even though my ancestors are scattered throughout Sweden they have often lived in the same parish for generations, and somehow avoided interbreeding.
