Join NATO instead. Some of the same baggage as in EU, but far less than in EU and actual safety guarantees from partners that actually have firepower. EU in military terms halved in it's nuclear and force projection capabilities as UK went for Brexit.
When it comes to military capabilities, only country capable of doing major expeditionary missions is France. They are never going to help us with anything. Russia seems like a lesser threat to me right now than Brussels. For example, most of the migrants that got here last year came through all of Europe and our dear neighbor Sweden. Only a small minority of them got through Russia. After talking with our president, Putin promised to secure their side of the border. To my understanding they've kept doing so after that, even though we didn't have much to offer them in exchange for it.
The way Russia dealt with it makes me feel a lot less afraid of them than I was earlier. They could've weakened or pressured us with the migrants as hybrid warfare if they wanted to, but they didn't.
