I also think many of the characters were horribly miscast right off the bat.
Danaerys is a good example of a shit - Teir actress with no regard to the source material destroying the potential of the character. Half the actors have never read the books, which essentially garaunteed that they have no idea how to portray their character properly.
As with anything, it was not designed to be adapted as a TV show, and if anything there should be at least 3 more episodes per season.
