Unless you can provide concrete proof (which is impossible) that God/unicorns don't exist, believers can always wiggle their way out. Which is why absolute proof/disproof is not the whole story, you also have to evaluate which claim requires the least assumptions--Occam's razor. Well actually, if you apply Occam's razor to the laws of the universe (as far as we "know" them), it seems to imply that the easiest answer to why those laws and natural constants we observe just happen to be exactly "right" to support life on our planet, and even stuff like atoms, suns and planets and so on... well either it's a giant fucking coincidence or "something" made them exactly so. There could be a trillion other universes out there where the conditions were not appropriate for life, but given enough tries, so to speak, life becomes inevitable without any divine intervention. It's just like asking "why are the conditions on earth just right for life". Because there are uncountable trillions of planets out there, each of which having a chance to produce organic life. Given those circumstances at least one (or more) are basically guaranteed to be in just the right spot. God is not the only way to resolve that paradox, and there are more elegant explanations (that might be subjective, though which is why a lot of smart people still choose God)

Well that's the "huge coincidence" I'm referring to. The multiverse theory where we just happen to be in the right one, on the right planet on top of it, has plenty believers in the scientific community as well. Then there are plenty people who started to believe that we're living in a simulation, a virtual reality - also scientists. Thing is, they are all more or less fine theories without hard enough evidence to say "this one is definitively proven". But as far as Occam's razor is concerned, our universe having been created by some super-being, virtual or not, is a way shorter explanation than the mind-boggling stuff Hawking comes up with in his books - and he isn't even sure if it's a multiverse or the billionth loop of the same thing or a burp in spacetime so there's that.
A God of some kind is an elegant explanation even for "smart people".
