Assault weapons are not a mechnical nor operational classification of firearm but a vague legal term that may include some semi automatic rifles.
Assault rifles have box mags and select fire.
Semi automatic rifles are in turn used in about 2 percent of homicides.
Reagan supported some firearms restrictions- firstly not a ban on semi autos, secondly he was no Goldwater or gun rights standard bearer, thirdly so what?
