You can actually buy seed now with food stamps and fruit trees or at least you can in my state. My family is poor and on food stamps. We invested what little money we have in a garden every year and it continues to grow. The quality of produce is waaaayyy better than the store. That 200 of food stamps is now producing more than 1000 dollars of food a year.

That will give you some decent tortillas, guacamole etc, to which you need garlic/limes to be fair.

BULL! SHIT!

I JUST got back from the store a few hours ago with a girl I actually knew from highschool, apparently a single mom, using SNAP or WIC or whatever... She bought a feast! This is isn't the first example, I see this same scenario once a month because they always fuck up and get the wrong item and have to go back and get the one on the list of SNAP approved items.

There were FOUR GALLONS OF MILK. Each one is -- what? $6 a gallon? That's over $30 right the fuck there. Not to mention all the other food. They always, always have an absolute SHIT TON of food. Where my employed ass is buying soup because I'm broke.

If you ever see someone holding up the line with a ton of food, it's a single mother on SNAPs

>Is this the right formula? No, okay let me slowly walk back there and get another one.

>Oh that's not the right one? Let me repeat the process because I'm sure this gentlemen waiting to buy food with his own money doesn't want to strangle me right now.

No way man produce is cheap.. even organic produce can be cheap if you shop smart. I buy organic spinach potatoes and apples but but normal bananas avacados and citrus.. certain things are pointless to get organic, others greatly lower your intake of pesticides.

There's a grocery store in my area called Sprouts, I know they have them in other states.. it's basically whole foods but smaller and with prices that aren't fucking ridiculous. Like a normal grocery store, but with more organic selelctions. And their produce is actually cheaper than anywhere else. Sometimes buying something organic there costs less than buying it normal at another grocery store.. it retarded.

As if the average SNAP beneficiary buys what's in the pic. THe reason they're on SNAP is because they are inherently lazy leechfucks. They are not going to buy foods that require preparation, they are going to buy carbs carbs and more carbs. This is a good thing though because the leechfuck army, especially the niggers and mexicorns are rapidly an heroing themselves on diabetes!

I was poor for a while. Instead of buying free-range organic shit I lived off of literally 2-3 bucks/day and still had a somewhat healthy and warm meal every day.

individual you reply to has the right idea, but does not understand it.

meat and carbs are a combination that, for biochemical reasons, increase rate of diabetes and obesity, theres several epidemiological studies on this, there is a reason china is trying to curb meat consumption to stop obesity and diabetes explosion in the country.

You can google the subject if you have an actual interest in it, but simply put meat is great nutrient rich food, but it shouldnt be consumed at the levels it is, should be occasional, or, depending on the perspective/morality, never.

I go to a local farmers food store or the farmers market. I can get 50 lbs of quality big ass potatoes for 8 bucks. I swing by an ohio farm, its a bit of a trip but I just do it while i go grocery shopping, you pick your own strawberries for a dollar a quart. Sams club bag o rice, followed by beans and lentils. You can eat hella cheap and still be healthy.
>>
>>78858677

A lot of people refuse drinking tap water. For some valid reasons, some invalid reasons, doesnt matter.

Perhaps in the US its not as cheap as it is here, coke is far cheaper than water where i live.
9liters of coke for 4 pounds, 1.5l of water for 89p (cheap one).

This thread again?

$29 could get you a lot more if you shop smarter and were more efficient.

It's laughably easy to grow so much of your own food. You can grow potatoes in pretty much anything, like a trash bag of dirt.

If you don't have a lawn, chives and onions are extremely easy to grow indoors, so, no need to pay for them. Same thing with herbs. They don't take much space at all.

You can make your own tortillas too, those tortillas are probably like ten cents each and cost half a cent each to make once you have the masa.

Finally, there's no reason why that isn't a lot of food. Eat a lot of rice like the Japanese. There's plenty of nice ingredients for a bean stew that will make enough servings for three meals for a family too. On Sunday I'd use the eggs, tortillas, a green onion and whatever is left of that tomato to make some nice migas.

Basically there's no excuse for starving in America, there is food everywhere, and getting $29 a week is plenty.

Are you saying that because the link to potassium is stronger the link to sodium is non-existent even though the line right before that stated otherwise?

>getting or dying from cardiovascular disease has been less consistent.
Again, are you being foolish in your reading? The link to high blood pressure is non-existent because the relationship to getting or dying from cardiovascular disease is less consistent?

Just make sure the plants don't burn in the summer sun so use some partial cover to limit sun intensity to like 60-80% if it is a problem (idk what the sun is like over there)

To add to this, you don't even need dirt to grow them in. Are you retarded or just baiting? For something simple like tomatoes you literally just plant them and forget. You don't even have to buy anything but the tomatoes you start with. After that it's just dirt, sun, and water. Sun and rain are free. If you're literally too stupid to be able to find dirt for free then just kill yourself.

Furthermore, some states, such as Oklahoma, have deals with wireless communications providers to provide low-cost internet and cell phone service. One of my workers who lives in his truck uses it, and he gets a basic Android phone with 3 gigs of data for like $10-$15 dollars a month.

Look, in the 1970's there were two studies conducted on salt. One was a population study (always unreliable) and the other was a force-fed rat study. This is where "Dieticians" got the idea that salt led to heart disease.

Since then, every time a major study is conducted to determine if salt consumption leads to heart disease, there's no conclusive evidence. Because it flat out doesn't.

In fact, every time they study it they find out that NOT eating enough salt harms you.

It's never been real science. Higher sodium levels are found in richer foods that inactive people overeat that CORRELATES to higher obesity and heart disease. Sodium is just a scapegoat.

yes if they buy flowers and packs or started plants. starting a garden can be expensive if you need to build it and get soil. but then a pack of tomato seeds cost $1.50 and i get enough tomatoes to make enough sauce for winter. its easily sustainable if a person knows what they are doing. spending money on other garden stuff doesn't actually drive up the cost of the tomato.

m8, you don't know what you're talking about.

I live in New Jersey, the asshole of the US. We are the most densely populated and most polluted state in the union. Our air is thick with smog and smoke, NYC and Newark, two of the most polluted cities in the US, are both a stone's throw away. Our soil is also some of the most polluted in the country. You know what I have growing in my backyard RIGHT NOW? A tomato plant, that produces large, juicy tomatoes every year. All I do is water it sometimes, but it's not even really necessary.

If you really think that because YOU failed to grow a plant, that gardening must be impossible, you need to get your head out of your ass and get over yourself.

>making compost is no joke either it doesnt pay itself off if you just look at the labor alone

Nigger you just take your plant based garbage and throw it in a bin, maybe add some other shit too. If you can't handle that much ""work"" then maybe the myth about welfare recipients being lazy is true after all.

Oh, and I should also point out the point is about sodium's connection to high blood pressure. Related but separate from "heart attacks, strokes, or death."

To humor your corollary point, at best the "seven studies" demonstrates that there is no direct relation but nothing about indirect relations. Given how the article appears to try and move the goalposts from hypertension to "heart attacks, strokes, and death" I wonder if the author is being disingenuous.
>>
>>78861897
>The point is about over-consumption
Which is still not what the science of today suggests is unhealthy.

Specifically, modern studies suggest that high blood pressure correlates to high sodium excretion, specifically when not paired with potassium excretion. And then only in certain populations in certain amounts.

It's pure junk science, it always has been. But keep believing absolute unproven horseshit, you appear to be great at it.

youre so wrong dude im telling you

people who have nice yards BOUGHT those plants already grown from a facility where they grow them

you cant just plop some seeds down anywhere and watch it spring up like minecraft

everyone i know who has ever grown anything had to buy pre mixed fertilized soil from a gardening section of a store and many bags of it and had to put in a ton of work to where its not worth it for the yield

Repeating your argument does not make it any more valid than present an irrelevant article.

>modern studies suggest that high blood pressure correlates to high sodium excretion, specifically when not paired with potassium excretion. And then only in certain populations in certain amounts.
You might want to alert the Mayo Clinic of your findings!

>Too much salt (sodium) in your diet. Too much sodium in your diet can cause your body to retain fluid, which increases blood pressure.

Obviously they haven't got the memo.

We're not suggesting that those foods be your primary nutritional source, we're suggesting you use them to make meals out of your core foods, the rice, the beans, the eggs. Obviously most people can't grow their own rice or beans or eggs, otherwise I'd suggest that. Onions are a great source of flavor and you don't need a lot of it to add flavor to your food. Same with garlic. No need to pay for that either.

So while what is pictured looks very primitive, in reality there is plenty that can be done to make very tasty, fresh-tasting dishes.

wut, most seeds you use can be recycled from the fruits and vegetables you eat.

Tomatoes, throw it in the dirt, in a month you'll have several tomato plants.
Potatoes, cut it up and throw it in the dirt. When it grows, put more dirt on it to make more potatoes
cabbage, lettuce, that sorta thing, plant some seeds, water it, work it up a little and you have a head of cabbage.
Peppers, put it in the ground, water it, you have a pepper plant.
carrots, put seeds in the dirt, you got a carrot
corn, put seeds in the dirt, you got a corn plant
I can go on, but you get the point.

Gardening isn't an expensive task unless you make it expensive. It's hardly time consuming either. and seeds are cheap, for a little extra cents you can buy heritage seeds so you can actually grow more food from those plants when they fruit.

You can start seeds indoors in peat pellets and move them out after your last frost date, but sometimes they just die for no reason. They usually get leggy if you grow them indoors and get killed by rain or just die later. If you start them outdoors they're hardier, but they're still seedlings and can get killed easily by rain or eaten overnight by slugs.

So a few select locations. Do you have any idea how big Cali is? I would have to drive 1hour+ to use an EBT card in LA. I called what was near me and it is not accepted.

So it is definitely not universal which basically makes the whole point moot.

There's the slippery slope aspect too. I can see banning candy since it's just sugar, but when does it become OK to ban foods for being "junk"? How much nutritional value do they need? Should frozen foods be banned, even though they're still fairly decent sources of nutrition, albeit heavily salted?

>Tomatoes, throw it in the dirt, in a month you'll have several tomato plants.

id love for you to grow me some tomatoes using this strategy

thanks for the advice man i believe you

what actually happens is that you throw the plants in the ground and then 4 days later theres a rainstorm that whipes out 1/2 of them then the other ones wilt away a week later when it gets a little too hot one day and then some had a nutrient deficiency the leaves turned yellow and died

oops

hey atleast i got my 1 wilted grape tomato with wrinkles in it with a beetle eating off the corner of it after all this money and months of work

that was great

nigger learn to read its restaurant locations, meaning where you can use your ebt card to buy hot meals.

>>78863010
>>78863083
not cash benefits, its for the hot meal option which is ebt and thats only in LA County region
>>
>>78862619
You have never grown plants before.
You don't need that fertilizer bullshit. Farmers need that shit because they're working land that's been growing crops for decades and has been stripped of nutrients. Most people's backyards can handle a small backyard, plus you don't normally start them outside, you put them in a nursery cup or pot then move them outside when the conditions are right. Plants like tomatoes, potatoes and corn can start outside just find though since they're more hardier.
>>
>>78863233
If you buy the plants at the grocery store that are already fairly big then they're hardier, but I'd like to see anyone grow plants from seed their first year and come away with a decent harvest. Even the disease resistant heavy-bearing varieties can still get killed by weather, fungus, or animals/insects.

It's a list of places where you can use the cash benefits, meaning where you can use your EBT card like a ATM card and withdraw money. Those restaurants accept the card and you can pay with your cash benefits. You cannot pay with your food stamp balance which is separate.

>>
>>78863233
I have done just that. I've done that with pumpkins as well. Smash a pumpkin on the ground then stomp on the seeds and in a month they grow. I don't know how many times I've accidentally grown tomatoes because I just throw bad ones out back. It's not fucking rocket science dude.
>>
>>78862619

No I grew them from seed! Soak them overnight, then stick them about an inch deep in the dirt! Then keep the soil around the root system moist! About 80% of my seeds germinated! Cost me $2!
>>
>>78863406
Depends where you live, what type of soil you have(clay, loam, sandy loam), the organic content, drainage rate, and the PH of the soil in your area. Most suburban backyards will work, just not that well. Your plants might get end rot or powdery mildew the first year until the soil biota builds up.
