It took me years to get my first one and all I need was repeat every night and morning for 15 minutes - I will have a lucid dream.
Then I got it and got so excited I actually ended up in a dark space with no details - then someone woke me up.
Later on I learned that actually listening to expert tips and following elaborated techniques suck as MILD or WILD is actually the universal to-go option.
Just stick with them and work hard, it's just like when you learn math - you start with basic algebra ( equivalence of dream journal, autosuggestion, planning dreams out ) but there's lots of work ahead.
And when you get them - the struggle just beings, because you have to master it - to shatter your delusions at first and end with a clean mind.
Otherwise you could just be an undisciplined fuck and have sex / etc in your dreams - but it will last little time - you'll get excited and wake from them fast - or they will turn into nightmares often.

You also need to be able to notice that you're dreaming. Most accomplish this by performing "reality checks." Like clapping your hands, maybe keep a note in your pocket, some kind of something to check if you're dreaming or awake.
I accomplished this because I was thinking about lucid dreaming so much that I thought of it when I was dreaming. Also at the time I had a set way of doing things. If I didn't have my cell phone in my pocket, something was off, and turned out I was dreaming.
So there really are no rules, just understand what you're trying to do and make it a part of your life.
Now, once you actually are lucid dreaming just stay calm and breathe. You aren't staying calm because some freaky shit might happen, it's just because it's easy to wake yourself up with excitement. Actually I've found that lucid dreams are less "story like" that regular dreams. Like once I went lucid, all the characters in my dream got lobotomized.
Dream sex is fun obviously, but so is yelling, flying. Some say eating is the best but I never did that.
