What fucked it for them was the low turnout. In typical millennial fashion they fucked off to Glasto/a refugees welcome night somewhere and then complained that they didn't get what they wanted because they couldn't be bothered to turn up. This. Funny thing is, they don't see the thought "the people shouldn't be able to decide because the people are stupid" all 'problematic' at all, because they see themselves as part of 'the people'. According to them, they themselves are always smart and part of some fictitious upper class that's separate from. the people.
Meanwhile they always complain about how people with lower education should be given more chances and subsidies etc. The doublethink is real.
I work in media in London. I'm from a regional working class background but play the role of an urbanfag pretty well. The people here are far more snobby than anyone I met back home. The way they casually dismiss people "up north" as racist etc is just disgusting. Seeing a 24-year-old privately educated girl with dyed hair talk about how xenophobic people are up north "because all the mines closed and stuff and they just want to take it out on the wrong people" is disgusting. Back home the people were surprisingly open-minded. I went through an edgy phase where I dismissed some politicians for being "posh" etc and was put in my place for dismissing people based on a background they didn't choose. Fairly open-minded folk with a basic but valid understanding of justice and fairness.
