Collectivism absolutely did, and does work, at the expense of individual freedoms. The Soviets and China both grew incredibly strong from the collectivism communism brought.
If you're talking about socialism as the Marxist ideal, it can work, but only on a very small scale with a culturally and ethnically homogeneous population. Communism actually has worked in Cuba, even in spite of the 50 year, incredibly strict trade embargo by the US. Communism will never work on a nation larger than Cuba though.

I guess that's true. I suppose by "work" I would define it as have a successful nation-state capable of exerting power over others. It definitely was not a power system ever designed to "work" for the individual though.

That's not really true. Modern China's economic supremacy is because of Deng, but in the Maoist era it was still a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Point in fact: the Korean war.
