No real politician can "leave" his party in the US.
In another country, a disgrunted politician would leave and create his own party, hoping the main party will dislove and the new party can take its place. It happens quite often.
In the US, it's impossible, only republicans and democrats can hold office and have any weight in a federal election. Switching destroy your credibility and your career.
