I think most of /pol/ is too young (board of teenage edgelords) to remember all the PIIIGS saga and there was big discussion of how broken the EU was when the 2008 financial crisis got going. Now with the refugee crisis, Erdogan-Germany relationship, a number of other things creating problems.
Like all things I think it comes down to economics more than anything else. The refugee crisis was just the straw that broke the camel's back

No, the EU has slowly been destroying itself through not allowing its member states true representation or decision making.
His and the US's incompetence/inaction to take on ISIL effectively was simply the final domino. The refugee crisis being the final straw that showed how ineffective the leadership of the EU truly is.
