I'd be pissed if it was purely an aesthetic decision, but the reason they went with more colorful graphics with large shapes was so that it's easy to tell what's going on from looking at the map alone. Since cities are spread out and tile improvements are no longer just "farm/mine/trading post", you need to be able to tell at a glance what districts are producing what and in what quantities without having to hover over them or pull up a menu. If things were too detailed, realistic, and less colorful, that wouldn't be a easy thing to do. It's like how TF2 got cartoony and colorful graphics mainly so you could tell quickly what classes were in play, what weapons they had, and what team they were on.

I don't know anyone who plays EU4 (I was in a Civ 5 thread on /v/ and a couple of shitposters said to try a "real" strategy game like EU so I decided to actually give it a shot) but I do have a couple of bros who play CK2 and I gather the Paradox games have a lot in common so that may make a better gateway?

Does anybody in Civ V pick anything besides autocracy for their ideology? It's is obviously the most superior ideology. The resource-doubling is great, but the perma-city state buff absolutely guarantees and diplomatic victory if you aren't doing so great at conquest.

It's pretty normal to not have any money early game, it's not until like mid 1500's that you start raking in cash. You can go without advisors for a while to save money.
