This tiny island was the center of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and made a tremendous amount of people very rich on this island.
The abolition of slavery ruined the island's economy and it would not recover until Shell built the oil refinery here in 1915. A refinery that proved vital for the allies during WW2. 100% of the fuel used for Operation Husky came from here. And something like 90% of fuel for Operation Overlord came from this island.
Shit got fucked again when Venezuela nationalized it's oil industry in 1975. But ever since the 90s the island has slowly been crawling back up. We are currently one of the most stable economies in the Caribbean and prospects look good. We may actually move to a new golden age for the island in the near future.
