One think that's clear is that there's a TON of delusion going around. They have a narrative they don't really deviate from-- basically, all muslims are normal people like us (probably true to an extent) who only want to find a better life and build a future for themselves and others. Any muslim who breaks this expectation isn't just an insane jihadi who wants to destroy impose sharia law. They're a tragic case created by things we can either help with, or problems we cause-- like poverty, racism, war, lack of hope for the future etc.
Where they fail is in believing that our values are self-evident, and that everyone else in the world already holds them by default. They think we just need to give them an environment to grow as people, and all these problems will resolve themselves.
They really ought to know better. Why can't they see the truth despite the real world shoving it in their faces every day? I don't think it's possible to know for sure... There's a few theories, potentially overlapping, and some may explain it for some but not others.
Indoctrination - They've been fed this shit all their lives. It's hard to get rid of ideas you were taught when you were young, especially when it's so emotionally charged. That some of the foremost modern geniuses are Christians should tell you something.
Tribal affiliation - People evolved in tribes. It may be a psychological inevitability to hate the out-group, whoever it is.
Cognitive dissonance - It's easier to deny the truth, especially when people you don't like keep telling you about it.
Virtue Signaling - When you support causes that go against your own self interest, your morality for doing so is amplified.
Fear of ostracism - Beliefs counter to the narrative are so distasteful to the true believers that they can't help but demonize anyone who has them. Add in nervous virtue signalers who want to divert suspicion from themselves and you've got thought control on lock.
