They lay eggs which take 140 days to hatch and they reach sexual maturity after 14 years (their lifespan is about 50 but they can live up to 100). They're extremely slow breeders and the black olm has only been discovered in 1994.
The problem is that they are really only adapted to the specific cave environment they live in (for example the growth of offspring is stunted) if the water in the caves gets too warm. They're amphibians and predators, feeding of cave organisms (insects, slugs, small cave fish).
Of course since they were discovered the situation in the cave network the black olms live in has improved, but there are still only a few representatives of the species. I don't recall any attempts to relocate them to a different cave but I don't think it would work out very well.

Yup, it's bison. People fuck up the name constantly. There are water and cape buffalo, but none in the US outside of zoos. Bison is the correct term although people will that they can be called the "american buffalo" as well, which is bullshit. That's just for people who aren't interested in using the correct terminology so they decided to make up their own name. Not sure why this aggravates me so much, but I just traveled across the country for a year and I swear even most natives of states with large bison population still call them fucking buffaloes.
