The main reason Remainers are so fanatically in favour of the EU is an inherent distrust, often outight hatred, of the British electorate and people. Leaving the EU doesn't automatically mean we close our borders or change any other policies - our immigration policy, healthcare, defence etc will all be decided as they usually are in General Elections. Outside of the EU people will still be able to vote Labour, or Tory, or Green, or Lib Dem, or UKIP or whatever when it comes to electing a government - but that's not good enough for Remainers as there's always the risk a right wing (proper right wing, not socjus moderate centre-left like the current Conservatives) party coming to power in a fair election.
An independent UK wouldn't automatically close it's borders - it could continue to allow EU citizens to settle and work as they currently do. Hell it could choose to completely open it's borders. The point is that an independent UK would be free to manage it's own borders and foreign policy while the UK within the EU is not and this situation suits the Europhiles because it means the British electorate cannot alter the parmenent EU dicated policies adored by the establishment.
The white working classes in the UK lost the trust of the Establishment Left when they repeatedly voted for Thatcher and the Conservatives (much like Reagan in US) which is one of the reasons they've been so happy to import ever more 3rd worlders who will vote tribally for them - rather than have to make the effort to win over unreliable British voters.

The borders opening up obviously happened earlier (1965 in US, roughly same time for UK) but it was only after the 80s and early 90s (Thatcher+Major, Reagan+Bush) showed the Left that they couldn't depend on the white working classes to mindlessly vote for them that you start seeing a pretty huge disconnect between Party Establishment and the working classes - with newer immigrant communities being courted for votes. You look at the 'Old' Labour Party in the UK (up till early 90s) and while it was obviously ideologically retarded due to socialism it was still patriotic and full of politicians who actually had proper life experience before going into politics later in life. Labour now is dominated by middle and upper class career politician hacks who've never done an honest day's work and care more what the London cocktail party set think of them than what poor working class Britons do.

Because international work and travel obviously DOES NOT EXIST anywhere except within the EU. You'd think the fact that there are more British citizens living and working in Australia and New Zealand alone than in the entirity of the EU combined might make them stop and realise "Hmmm, maybe EU membership actually is not essential to travelling across borders" but obviously not.
