Idk about your country but I'd find a style and stick with it. I took MMA (Brazilian Jiu Jistu mixed with Muay Thai kickboxing) for 4 years and that's won me every fight I've been in. I took karate for 6 years and taught it for 4, and if I ever use it in a fight, I'll end up in jail. I'd say learn MMA, it's more widespread, better geared towards all people, and more practical, e.g. After my first MMA lesson I had a practical knowledge of at least one choke and one takedown, but with karate, there's a lot more about tradition and shit. Karate does have weapons though which is super cool. It's your call, I'd suggest you at least learn to throw a punch and keep a guard up and watch a few BJJ videos to learn how to not die on the ground. The biggest thing I can tell you is that if you're in a street fight, no "sparring etiquette" matters though. Fight fucking dirty.
