Many of them are shamed into believing in liberal ideals, with many leftists claiming that they are sexist or racist if they follow any right wing ideals or politicians. When you say educated, you have to think about what field they studied. When it comes to empathy, the less intelligent only think of those around them, their family or community, and rely on religion to tell them what's right and wrong. Intelligent people empathise more with those outside of their social group and those with differing viewpoints. Correlation does not equal causation. Also I feel as if these statistics are not true or perhaps the people on either end of the political spectrum were chosen selectively. An explanation that I can find to be fitting very often is that people from the upper middle class upwards, who often are well educated, claim to be collectivist when they are not personally affected by the political decisions they promote.
