In polish Belarus means White Rus, but you need to remeber that Rus =/= Russian as back then there was no such word as Russia. Rus = Ruthenia which applied more to a geographical region occupied by a different slavic groups which lived between Poland and Muscovy.
White russia comes from them supporting the white side, which was the tzar as opposed to the red who were the commies.
